3 Questions to Ask Before Recruiting Yourself

Now is the time to have an honest conversation with yourself.

Like me, you probably have thirty schools that seem like a possible match. That's too much. The max should be ten. Because college applications are EXPENSIVE. And recruiting yourself is TIME-consuming.

Things you need to ask yourself:

•    Do I absolutely 100% want to swim in college?
►    Yes. Make it a point to continue to excel in your sport. Coaches look at your performance in the last year more than anything else. Make sure to stay on top of your academics too.
►    No. Maybe you want to try other stuff in college. That is totally fine! If you aren't sure about your decision yet, pick a school that has a team or a club team. You may change your mind later. If you aren’t a superstar athlete focus more on your academics. Either way, you need good grades.

•   Would I go to this school if I weren't swimming?
►    Yes. Great! It sounds like you found a good fit.
►    No. If you're not in love with your school right now, it's totally fine. I was a bit indifferent about all the schools I went to. Every school will have both negatives and positives. The key is finding people that make it worth your while. If the team is that group of people, you can make it work. If not, transfer.

•    What kind of lifestyle do you want in college?
►    Do you want to live on campus or off campus?
►    Do you want a large campus or small campus?
►    Do you want to be close to home or far from home? Plane or car ride?
►    Do you want a party school?
►    Do you want to go to a PWI or HBCU?

There's no shame in whatever way you answer those questions. It's things you need to think about. This is your life for the next four years. My coach told me that you can be great at three things at a time. I chose, academics, swimming and my health. In that order. If you want to party a lot, that will impact one of those three things. If you live off campus, it can be expensive and commuting could be time-consuming. If you live far from home, plane tickets are expensive. A car on campus could also get expensive. That could be the time you spend studying or the money you use to pay for school. Prioritize!!!

Repeatedly ask yourself these questions are you will start to figure out what is and what isn't for you.

Stay honest with yourself!
